Marine Cpl Delatorre was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expedition, Twenty-nine Palms, California. Delatorre died from wounds sustained during combat. Jesse was a 1998 graduate of East Aurora High School. While a student there, he was a member of the East Aurora Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, and also participated in choir, band and drama. Jesse joined the Marines because he was troubled by what was happening in the world. His unit deployed in January in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Jesse was awarded the National Defense Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal.Lance Corporal De La Torre of Aurora, Ill., graduated from East Aurora High School. He was 27 when he left his desk job and decided to enlist because he was troubled by what was happening in the world. Jesse was a Christian who enjoyed church and helping people. In his free time, he played the saxophone and earned a brown belt in karate. He is survived by his father, Aureliano, his mother, Raquel, and six half-siblings. He was working an office job in November 2005 when he enlisted, a decision that took his mother by surprise. He liked jazz, classical and Ranchero music, and that he was particularly partial to tacos. He had a knack for languages and had begun learning Mandarin and Hindi, Villagran said. De La Torre also volunteered as a translator for immigrants who only spoke Spanish. He was 29.
