Aug. 27, 1923 - Feb. 8, 2016
Resident of Walnut Creek
Dawn Monica Hanson, 92, returned to her heavenly home on February 8, 2016 after a valiant battle with a long illness. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.
Dawn was born to the late Adrian and Ruby O'Sullivan, in Adelaide, Australia, on August 27, 1923. She married the love of her life, Milton Hanson in Australia in 1942. Being a war bride she relocated with her first born son, Jeffery, to Berkeley, California, to await the return of Milton from military duty. In her early years Dawn focused on being a homemaker and raising her children. In her later years she found her passion in coaching youth track and cross country, mentoring death row inmates at San Quentin Prison, and volunteering at John Muir Hospital. Dawn's life was guided by her faith and in 1995 she received certification as a Lay Ecclesial Minister where she was able to administer holy communion to the sick and aged.
Dawn was blessed with a large and loving family. Dawn and Milton raised six children together with patience, discipline and love. Dawn was extremely supportive of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and encouraged all their endeavors.
Dawn was an avid sports enthusiast. She enjoyed watching her favorite local teams which included the Warriors, SF Giants and the SF 49ers. She also followed tennis and golf. She enjoyed many years of traveling abroad and had a passion for fine dining, shopping and chocolate.
Dawn is predeceased by her husband, Milton and her first grandson, Zachary. She is survived by her six children: Jeff (Linda) Hanson, Jay (Ginny) Hanson, Bryan (Dana) Hanson, Mark (Rhonda) Hanson, Jolien (Jerry) Quarle, and Kiley Hanson. Grandchildren: Brandt, Gillian, Jeff, Monica, Natalie, Megan, Bethany, Hailey, Jillian, Madalyn, Cailin, Zachary, Katherine, Lola, Westleigh, Wade, and William. Great grandchildren: Colman, Brooklynn, Everly, Teja, Ella, Ezra, Levi, Gavin, Gwenyth, and Maisy. Dawn will be missed by her loved ones, who celebrate the fact that she is at peace with her creator.
