John Erwin Schweitzer, age 63, of Champaign, passed away Sunday, February 21, 2016, at C-U Nursing and Rehab, Savoy.
John was born January 17, 1953, in DeKalb, IL, the son of Harvey and Lois Schweitzer. He spent his early life on the family farm near Malta, IL until 1962 when the family moved to Champaign, IL. He attended a number of schools before graduating from Centennial High School in 1972 in the Special Education program. Though mentally challenged, John was able to hold several jobs and lived independently. He enjoyed playing the piano and organ and had an intense interest in all sorts of electric gadgets. He will always be remembered as being a friendly and caring individual.
He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents.
He is survived by his father, stepmother (April); one brother, David (Cathy) Schweitzer of Highland Village, Texas; one sister, Elaine (Brian) of Champaign, IL; two step-brothers, John (Kathryn) Byers of Keller, Texas, Jeffrey Byers of Champaign, IL; one step-sister, Jennifer Rojas of Decatur, IL; and 9 nephews and nieces.
A private memorial service in Champaign and graveside service in Malta, IL will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Developmental Services Center 1304 W. Bradley Ave Champaign.
