Prominent socialite and wife of US Navy Lieutenant Thomas Massie. In 1931 the Massie's were stationed at Pearl Harbor. Known for her role as the alleged victim in the famous rape case in which Thalia accused five local native Hawaiian men of sexually assaulting her as she walked home alone from a party. Able to identify only two of the men with her glasses on. All five were arrested and went to trial which resulted in a hung jury causing outrage with many US Naval personel. Subsequently one of the attackers was kidnapped by Lt Massie and a friend, taken to a private home and was threatened at gunpoint to coerce a confession. The hostage was shot to death and his bloody corpse was discovered in the back of Lt Massie's auto also in the auto was Thalia's mother Grace Fortescue, prominent socialite. Both were arrested on murder charges and defended by Clarence Darrow. Guilty of manslaughter was the verdict with a sentence of ten years but due to pressure from the navy all the way to the White House, the territorial governor reduced the sentence to one hour of time served in his office. Which of course caused outrage in the local Hawaiian community. Charges of racism were hurled about. The navy transferred Lt Massie out of Hawaii and Thalia went back to being a socialite like her mother moving between estates on Long Island and Palm Beach. The Massie's divorced in 1934. A seperate investigation conducted by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency concluded that the rape never took place. Thalia Massie drifted into obscurity in the coming decades and after suffering from years of depression committed suicide with an overdose of barbiturates at her Palm Springs, Florida home on July 3, 1963.
