Florence Mary Tracy Howard, born to Charlotte Lynch and Eugene Tracy in Bolton, VT on May 8, 1911, passed away peacefully at home at 106 years old on May 11, 2017. She was educated in Burlington schools and graduated top of her class from Cathedral High School, where she played varsity basketball; was awarded the Greek & Latin prizes for excellence in her senior year and was the lead soloist in the choir. Upon graduation she received a 4 year academic scholarship to Trinity College. While there, she met her husband Harold F. Howard, a pre-med student at UVM. They were married February 2, 1932 in Burlington. Florence and Harold, who was a career Army Officer, traveled the world for over 20 years on 4 continents, including 11 states. During their 57 years of marriage, Florence raised 6 children; and had 18 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great children. She is predeceased by her husband Harold, her mother and father, her sister Alice Deere, her brother Donald Tracy, daughter Carole, grandsons Willis Bradford Jr. and Donald Little Jr.

In 1964 she and Harold returned to VT upon Harold's retirement from the Army and took a job with VT State Highway Dept. in Montpelier. After his retirement in 1975, they divided their time between New Smyrna Beach, FL and E. Montpelier where they hosted their children and many grandchildren. After Harold's death in 1989 she moved to Freedom Drive in Montpelier and continued to winter in FL until 2007.

Florence enjoyed dancing, swimming, reading, playing Bridge, watching her beloved Red Sox and Celtics and going to the semi-pro Frost Heaves games in Barre. She was always an active volunteer in the community; serving as President of the Elks Emblem Club, starting the first American kindergarten in the Phillippines in 1947 just after WWII, and was a devoted member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church. Over the years she served on the boards of many women's organizations. Her last years were spent at home with the help from all the wonderful people from Central VT Home Health & Hospice; her dear friend and care giver Mary Ann; her sons, whose care and comfort made it possible for her to remain in her home the last 9 years of her life. A memorial service will be held at St. Augustine's Church on Tuesday May 23rd at 4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CVHHH, 600 Granger Rd, Barre, VT 05641 or website cvhhh.org on her behalf.
