Funeral service for Mr. David Miller Waddell "Big Dave", 73, will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 3:00 PM at Saks Baptist Church with the Rev. Daniel Harper and Bro. Tommy Munroe officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends, at the funeral home, on Friday, January 26, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 to PM and then, at the church, one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Mr. Waddell went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, January 24, 2018.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Racine Miller Waddell; one daughter, Amanda Waddell Carpenter (Andrew) of Louisville, KY; two sons, Gray Waddell of El Paso, TX and Michael Waddell (Cari) of Alexandria; three grandchildren, Will Waddell, Emma Waddell and Chase Waddell; two great-grandchildren, Ellen and Cooper Waddell, all of Alexandria; five sisters, Myra Waddell Rust of Tuscaloosa, Mary Waddell Glass of Roy Webb, Julie Waddell Currie (Phil) of Trussville, Karen Waddell Smallwood (Bo) of Jacksonville, Janice Waddell Pritt of Weaver; three brothers, Jack Waddell (Nan) of Alexandria, Danny Waddell (Charlotte) of Jacksonville, and Wendell Waddell (Robbi) of Alexandria; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Waddell is preceded in death by parents, William (Bill) Waddell and Minnie Mahaffey Waddell; one sister, Sally Waddell Hayes; and two brothers, Billy Waddell and Johnny Waddell.
Mr. Waddell served his country and was honorably discharged from the United States Army. He was a member of the 101st Airborne in Vietnam where he was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service. He loved God and was a member of Saks Baptist Church and a member of the Auditorium Class. He retired from Monsanto/Solutia with 42 years of service where he was chief operator with the Niran department. "Big Dave" loved going to church and being Paw-Paw to his grandchildren. Prior to his heart issues and transplant, he enjoyed golf, fishing, and gardening in the outdoors. He was an avid Alabama football fan and was always giving to family, friends, and strangers in need. The family would wish to give special thanks to the UAB Cardiology and Transplant departments for all their care to him for many years.
