Gabe grew up in Henryetta Oklahoma where his father taught him to be a barber. After high school graduation, he served in the Army Air Corps at Kelly Field, San Antonio TX for 3 years. Life was tough for Gabe during the Depression. For three years he and his brother Harry ran the Allred Brothers Tool Company, traveling around the countryside, selling barber supplies, repairing tools and sharpening blades. He was a partner on the Dorsey(his sister's in-laws) farm at Stuart Place TX, where he met his sister Hazel's friend, Gertrude Roberts in 1933. They married in 1938 at Palmer TX. In 1941, he started work as a US Customs Inspector in Brownsville TX. He served in that job for 30 years and retired as a regional director in Houston. He enjoyed 9 years of retirement in Brownsville.

Gabe was multi-talented; he could do carpentry, joinery, sewing, cooking, general problem-solving; he was self-made and self-educated.
