Born Wilmington, Vt. which he left at age 15 to learn the baker's trade in Boston. He followed this business in N.Y. and Chicago successfully. While in Chicago he enlisted in the 13th regiment Ill. Vol. Inf., served 3 years, 8 months.
Re-enlisted for 1 yr. Honorable discharge Feb. 1866. He was hospital steward of the regiment. Feb. 1866 he located in Tomah, WI. where he was deputy sheriff for 8 yrs. and sheriff 2 yrs. He married while there Sophia daughter of Benjamin Shute, now his superior in R.R. work. They have 2 children, Edith S. who married John Fleming, and George B. Jr. His father in law persuaded him to come to Eau Claire, where he was appointed foreman in the bridge and building dept. on the C., St. P, M. and O. R.R.

Found dead in his home on Galloway St. evening July 13 1899, heart failure.
