Age 97, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 13, 2018, following several months of declining health.

Born on August 17, 1920, Everett was the youngest of Nelson and Nellie Hiestand's five children. He grew up on the family farm in northwestern Ohio and attended a one-room primary school, later graduating from Bluffton High School.

Everett was an ambitious young man who worked his way through college, receiving his AB in Chemistry from Bluffton University. His graduate education was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the U.S. Navy, but he returned to complete his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at The Ohio State University.

Everett was employed as a Senior Scientist at the Upjohn Company from 1955 until his retirement in 1990.

He concurrently served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan's College of Pharmacy from 1968 - 1992. Everett was a member of several professional societies and received a number of awards and honors for his work. He had a strong interest in education, serving as a trustee of the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation and as a member and past president of the Gull Lake Community Schools Board of Education.

He devoted his early retirement years to environmental issues, serving on the Kalamazoo County Environmental Concerns Committee and Environmental Health Advisory Council.

Everett and his wife Margie, who survives, would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on May 16.

He is also survived by:
[his son and his wife] Hiestand,
[his daughter] Hiestand,
[one grandson and his wife] Hiestand,
and several nieces and nephews.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place with internment at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan. No services are planned at this time.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or a charity of your choice.
