Hall of Fame Professional Golfer. He was considered one of the leading golfers of the 1950s and won two major championships (Masters and PGA Championship) during the decade. Born Douglas Michael Fortunato, he served in the Coast Guard during the Second World War. After the war, he was a leading amateur golfer in the New York area before turning pro in 1949. He won his first professional tournament, the Jacksonville Open, in 1952 and went on to win thirty-three pro and senior tournaments during his long career. In 1955, he won the PGA Championship by defeating Cary Middlecoff in the final match. Two years later, he won the Masters by three strokes over Sam Snead. He was a member of the United States Ryder Cup teams in 1955, 1957, 1959, and 1961. In 2011, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. At the time of his passing, he was the oldest surviving Masters champion.
