Gene G. Forstner, 75, of rural New Ulm died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 at his home.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to New Ulm School District 88 or to the donor's choice.

Gene is survived by his wife Evelyn Forstner of rural New Ulm; his mother Veronica Forstner of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Steve Kohlhepp of Maple Grove, Margaret "Marggi" and Randy Thordson of rural Hanska, and Marlys and Gerard Davis of Beaverton, Ore.; sons and daughters-in-law, Dave and Carrie Forstner of rural New Ulm, Steven and Franke Forstner of Prior Lake, Richard and Michelle Forstner of Afton, and Kevin and Jodi Forstner of New Ulm; 23 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and Luverne Fischer of rural Sleepy Eye, and Connie and Charles Reichensperger of St. Cloud; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Donna Forstner of rural Gibbon, Myron and Shirley Forstner and Rollie and Arlis Forstner, all of rural New Ulm.

Gene was preceded in death by his father Frank Forstner; and by a daughter Monica Forstner in infancy.

Gene was born Aug. 2, 1926 in New Ulm to Frank and Veronica (Boettger) Forstner. He attended New Ulm Public Schools and was a 1943 graduate of New Ulm High School.

He served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946 on a destroyer in the Pacific Theatre.

Gene married Evelyn Kral on September 6, 1949 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. After marriage they farmed in Lake Hanska Township, Brown County for 45 years until retiring in 1994. They continued to live on the farm. Gene served on the New Ulm School District 88 School Board from 1966 to 1978 and then was appointed again in 1994 and he served until the present time. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm where he served as an usher for many years, he was a past member of the Sioux Valley Hospital Board of Directors, a member of the New Ulm Hub Club, a past member and president of the Sigel Creamery, he was a past member of the Sigel School District 75 School Board, and was a past player-manager of the Searles and Hanska amateur baseball teams.
