It is with great sadness that the family of Karen Burkhart announces her passing. Karen was born August 28, 1940 to Nadine and Norman Crum in Shattuck, Oklahoma. She passed away May 12, 2018.

Services were held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 18, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Perryton, Texas with Rev. Mark Metzger officiating. Graveside services followed at Ochiltree Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton, Texas.

Karen is survived by her children Gena and Kenra from her marriage in 1959 to Gene Burkhart. She was preceded in death by her parents Nadine and Norman Crum, and sister, Bryna Harris.

Survivors include two daughters and spouses, Gena and Jamie White of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Kenra and Wayne Minnick of Shallowater, Texas; grandson, Preston White of Sulphur Springs; long time companion, Jack Dyer of Perryton; nephew, Jeb Harris, wife Amanda and son Hank of Amarillo; niece, Jera Harris and Vic Morrison of Canyon; extended family, and lifelong friends.

She graduated in the class of 1958 from Perryton High School and from West Texas State University in 1964 with a BS in Education. Her teaching career spanned 33 years with the last 20 at Perryton High School. She taught reading, English, speech and drama through the years. She loved her students and was so proud of them when they succeeded beyond high school.

Karen's greatest joys were her family and friends. She reveled in family reunions and class reunions, savoring each one. She never met a book she didn't like and was a longtime member of a book club where she developed special friendships with the ladies in the club. Traveling, or wandering as she liked to call it, brought her much happiness. She had an affinity for rocks and collected them from where ever she went and occasionally gave them as gifts. Traveling enabled her to indulge in a favorite hobby of her's – "adventurous eating".

She loved to dance and was a member of a square dance club in Perryton where she developed many good friendships. Other things that gave her pleasure in life were long conversations and traveling with her daughters and their families, her dog, Poppy, playing games with friends and family, making lists, watching Dancing with the Stars and her favorite color blue.

Karen will be lovingly remembered by family and friends.

The family suggests memorials to Museum of the Plains in Perryton; the Norman Crum Memorial Agricultural Fund C/o West Texas A & M University, or to one's favorite charity.
