Steve grew up in Blunt, South Dakota, with his mother and stepfather and attended school in Blunt, where he graduated with the class of 1962. He enlisted into the United States Navy on Aug. 16, 1962. He served on the USS Enterprise and USS Ranger during the Vietnam War. On Sept. 15, 1966, he was honorably discharged. Steve was united in marriage to Carolyn Jane Champlin on April 18, 1964, in Ventura, California. To this union, four children were born, Ken, Julie, Serena and Stephanie.
Steve began working as a mail carrier in 1967 in Ventura. In 1977, the family moved to Victorville, California, and stayed until 1986 when they moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he continued his postal career. In 1992, after 25 years, Steve retired from the postal service. In 1993, the couple moved to Lincoln, where they both worked at Molex Inc., until his retirement from there in 2010 after 15 years.
Steve was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 339 in Ventura, California, and the American Legion in Portsmouth, Iowa. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge 214 A.F.A.M. in Ventura, California. He enjoyed bowling and was in numerous bowling leagues in California and the Omaha area. His family was the most important thing in his life. He put his family above all else. He truly was the best husband, father and grandfather anyone could ask for.
