Gwendolyn ‘Gwen’ Jean (Benscoter) Jackson passed away peacefully at Kirksville Medical.
Gwen was born December 13, 1938 at Tinley Park, Illinois, to Frank and Frances Benscoter. She completed her schooling through High School there, where she excelled at playing the trombone. She loved to sing as well and continued singing throughout her life in church.
After devoting her early and middle adulthood to raising her children, Gwen found her professional niche in OATS. She proudly drove adults in need of assistance to wherever they needed to go and organized the schedule for the buses in the immediate area. In addition to day trips to surrounding towns and cities, Gwen guided tours to all fifty states as well as cultural trips to theater events in places such as Kansas City.
She won multiple awards and commendations through OATS for safe driving and her devotion. Upon her retirement, Gwen said that her work for OATS and her community was her greatest pride.
She married the love of her life, and from that union came five children, and later in life, a child of her heart.
Gwen had great tenacity. When she supported a cause, she was fully devoted to it, and often rallied others to provide their support as well. Her force of will seemed to move mountains.
While she was not a huge sports fan, Gwen had a life long love affair with the Chicago Cubs. Somehow, she and Marsh were able to sustain a long and fruitful marriage, despite the fact that he was a White Sox man.
Gwen is survived by sons Joseph Patrick Jackson (wife Karen) of Kansas City, Missouri and Daniel Frank Jackson (wife Darlene) of Kirksville, Missouri; Her daughters Marsha Carlene Jackson (partner Raul Patino) of Arcadia, Florida and Jeri Diane Sickels (husband John) of Lawrence, Kansas, and Ted Arzola, of the home. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and a large number of nephews and nieces, whom she dearly loved.
Gwen was preceded in death by her husband, General ‘Marsh’ Jackson, parents Frank and Francis (Spirandio) Benscoter, brother Frank Benscoter, and her son John (Jack) Jackson.
Funeral services for Gwen will be held 10:30 AM, Saturday, April 14, 2018 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Milan. Burial will follow in the Bairdstown Cemetery, north of Milan. Visitation will be held 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Friday evening at the church. Schoene-Ruschmeier Funeral Homes in Milan is handling arrangements.
