Adna spent his youth on a farm near New Hartford, Iowa. He married Nancy Alvira Belt in 1868 and they had 15 children. The family moved to Cloud County, Kansas in 1870 and then to Republic county about 1879, before relocating to Hancock County , Iowa about 1881. His farm was sold by sheriff's deed in 1898. Adna and Nancy, and nine of their children, moved to Alberta, Canada and homesteaded near Bullocksville (later to be changed to Haynes). He lived there until his death in 1934
