First Taree Casualty
Pte Henry Elwyn Plunkett, son of Mr J. E. Plunkett, of the Taree railway staff, is the first Taree boy to be killed in action during the present war. Mr Plunkett received a telegram conveying the sad news on Thursday afternoon. Pte Plunkett enlisted last year, and sailed for the Middle East on 28th September. He was born at Granville 23 years ago and came to Taree with his parents 13 years ago. His mother passed away after the family came to Taree. Deceased attended Convent primary and high school, and was later associated with Mr. Col. Flanagan in a carrying business. He was a splendid specimen of young Australian manhood. He has two brothers, John (aged 16) and Tom (10), as well as four sisters, Nurse Mary Plunkett (of the Sydney Hospital), Miss Gertrude Plunkett (at home), Eileen (15) and Doreen (14).
