Stephen Erroll Garland was born in New Hampshire on December 4, 1908, son of Wallace and Carrie Garland. He enlisted in the regular Navy on March 20, 1927. His 1931 dated Good Conduct Medal shows that he was on the minesweeper USS Bobolink, AM-20. The ship was on the east coast until 1931. The Ancestry Navy muster rolls shows that he reported on board the USS Idaho, BB-42, on March 5, 1935 and was on that ship until at least September, 1940. At time his rate was Y1c. In late 1940, he is shown in Hawaii, then transferred to the NAS Jacksonville, Florida. No further info is found on the web. Stephen Garland's last place of residence was North Conway, NH.

His group includes 1943 dated dog tags, 1931 dated GCM, American Defense medal with Fleet bar, American Campaign medal, Asiatic/Pacific Campaign medal, ribbon bars, discharge buttons, small cap insignia, service stripes, petty officer first shoulder insignia, pair of CWO shoulder boards, and uncut CWO-4 insignia for shoulder boards.
