Elizabeth "Eliza" Smith Roberts

Elizabeth was the daughter of Bridget Nary and Mathew Smith. The spelling of Nary has been found many ways and has been listed as Navy. Elizabeth's mother Bridget was married to Matthew Smith, who was a tailor in the city of Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan. The family lived in the Second Ward of the city of Monroe, Mi. in 1850. Mathew was thirty-three years old at this time and was born in Ireland. Bridget was twenty-eight years of age and also born in Ireland. Elizabeth's brother Matthew Smith was three years old and Elizabeth was six months old. Both Elizabeth and Matthew were born in Michigan. The 1850 census was the first Monroe census that was found to list all names in the family. Before that time only the husband was listed by name, followed by a check mark for how many females, males, and the age group of each. Other information found was from church records.

The Matthew Smith whose name is on the Bissonnette marker in St. Joseph Cemetery would be Elizabeth's brother.

Elizabeth was found in census records as Mary Elizabeth Roberts, which could have been her baptism name. Church burial, marriages etc. has Elizabeth.

Aged 83 years, 10 months, 9 days

Elizabeth died 5 months after her husband Peter passed away.

An Elizabeth Duffe who was twenty-two years of age, born in Ireland lived with them at this time. Mathew and Bridget lived next door to old Joseph Swope, who was a tailor by trade and was known to have brought other tailors to Monroe, as the town was growing at a rapid pace in population. The need and want for tailors at that time was very welcomed.
