Caroline Cross passed away in April of 2018 in York, SC. Caroline was born in 1927 in Langdon, NH to George L. and Beatrice Porter as the youngest of their four children. She lived there until graduating from Vilas High School and going on to UNH as member of the Class of 1949.

Not long after graduation, she married Carleton Cross of Sunapee and started the typical nomadic life of a U.S. Air Force family, living in France, Morocco, and Panama and in many parts of the United States.

She leaves behind her five children: James in Arizona, Susan Tochterman in New Hampshire, Kevin in South Carolina, Katy Scardina in Rhode Island and Andrew in Japan. There were also quite a few cats and a couple of dogs as well along the way; all this while, managing the family moves.

Upon retirement from the Air Force in 1973, the family returned to Langdon but unfortunately her husband passed away a few years later with three children still at home. She never complained, she just kept going and delved more and more into her life-long love of art as the years went by.

A frequent exhibitor at Art in the Park in Keene and elsewhere in the area, she shared her work and enjoyed the work of fellow artists. She was a member of Keene Art Association and the Saxtons River Art Guild and loved getting together with the friends she made in those groups.

Her years in a service family made her very comfortable with traveling and she continued to travel over throughout New England as well as Europe and Japan. This gave her plenty of opportunities to capture new ideas for her oil paintings.

Caroline had eight grandchildren of whom she was very proud and was always interested in their activities and lives.

After an active life, she suffered a stroke on April 12, 2018 and was moved to hospice care. A few days later at her son’s home overlooking a lake with three of her children, her daughter-in-law and two grandchildren around her, with Glenn Miller music playing in the background, she mercifully passed without suffering.
