James Harvey Mathis lived in Carroll Co, Arkansas with his older brother, John McConnell Mathis, and younger brother William Mathis. Their father was killed in the Civil War fighting for the North. The boys mother died or remarried and the boys were virtually left on their own at ages 12, 10 and 4 in the 1870 US Census for Carroll Co Arkansas. Their mother, Amanda, received a pension from the Union for a short while, and then the children received the pension. The younger two boys (James and Will) had a gaurdian by the name of Epps. James sued him in court for access to some of his funds.
It must have been a hard life for those young men. John McConnell came to Texas to try ranching and farming and James followed. They were very close.
