US Congressman. He graduated from Irving College in 1850 and became an attorney in Fayetteville in 1853. In 1861 he was a delegate to the Arkansas convention that voted to secede from the Union. During the Civil War he joined the Confederate Army as Colonel of the Thirteenth Arkansas Regiment, serving until the end of the war. After the Civil War he was Prosecuting Attorney for Arkansas' Fourth Judicial District, serving from 1866 to 1868. In 1872 he appeared to be an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for the US House of Representatives, but he successfully contested the election of William W. Wilshire and took his seat in Congress. Gunter was reelected four times and served from June 1874 to March 1883. He did not run for reelection in 1882 and returned to practicing law in Fayetteville.
