William M. Barnes was born in Tippecanoe County Indiana, October 2, 1834. He came to Richland County, Wisconsin, with his parents in 1849, and settled at Richmond, as it was then called, now Orion. Here he engaged with his brother, James T. Barnes, to learn the trade of carpenter and joiner. He followed that trade until 1861. On July 4th, 1861 he enlisted in Company H. Fifth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and served in Smith Division, Army of the Potomac, participated in the battle of Williamsburg and other minor engagements of McClellen's peninsular campaign. He was discharged on account of disability at Philadelphia, October 23, 1862, and returned home. On November 1, 1863 he was united in marriage with Ada M. Fries.
He continued to work at the carpenter trade until 1873 when he engaged in the mercantile business at Boaz and at the same time purchased a one-forth interest in the Boaz mill. Fourteen months later he sold out his interest in the store and puchased another one-forth interest in the mills. In company with his brother, James, he continued to operate the mills until January 1882, when he purchased his brother's interest and as sole proprietor remained actively in the milling business at Boaz until the fall of 1907. He then disposed of his interests there and with his wife spent the ensuing winter in Louisiana. Returning in the spring of 1907 he purchased his present residence property in Richland Center where he has since resided.
His death occured Wednesday, April 16th, after an illness and gradual decline extending over a period of eight months. Mr. Barnes was the father of eight children of whom seven, Lee Barnes, Hammond, Louisiana; Mrs. Charles Starr, Boaz, Wis; Guy Barnes, Kenly, North Carolina; Mrs. Frank Core, Lone Rock; Carl, Scott and Lulu Barnes, of Richland Center, with his widow survive him.
He was a kind father, a good neighbor, an honest and upright citizen with strong convictions for the right and his sympathies and influences were with every cause for the well-being of his fellow men.
