Harlan was born Aug. 27, 1920 in Helena and moved to Great Falls with his parents, Harleigh and Vera Cory two years later. He attended local schools and graduated from Great Falls High School in 1939. He attended the University of Montana and Northern Montana College in Havre. He entered the Army in August 1942 and was stationed at Fort Douglas, Utah, and Fort Ord, Calif. He served with the 532 Amphibious Engineers in New Guinea for which he received the Purple Heart.
He returned to the U.S. in 1945 and was employed by the W.G. Woodward Co. and Charteris Hardware, and managed Prospect Lumber Co. He opened his own paint store in 1961.
Harlan was an Eagle Scout, a member of the National Ski Patrol, a life member of the Elks Club, and a life member and past president of the Uptown Optimist Club. He belonged to Masonic Lodge 34, Scottish Rite and Algeria Shrine, and was an original member of the Ski Bums.
His hobbies were headlined by his love of skiing, which he participated in from 1937 until his late 70s. He enjoyed his weekly coffee hours with the Scottish Rite men and helping his Optimist Club members with their annual Christmas tree sales. As much time as possible was spent at the cabin he built in 1957 with the assistance of his father.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Clifford D. Cory.
