Gene (Bergin) Berger Hunter, 93, of Great Falls, a retired licensed practical nurse, died of natural causes Thursday, Dec. 15, at a Great Falls assisted-living center.
Gene was born in Clayton, N.M., on Feb. 25, 1918, to Ed and Florence (Skelton) Bergin. She was riding a horse when she was 4 years old, and herding cattle when she was 5 years old. Her family moved to Oregon, where she met Dick Berger at Oregon State University. They married and had two kids before Dick died in 1942. She married Keith Hunter in Portland, Ore., in 1944, and they had two kids there. Another was born after they moved to Great Falls.

She went back to school after her children were grown, and in 1966 earned her LPN degree. She and Keith divorced in 1972.

She was involved in Democratic politics and Toastmasters over the years, and enjoyed owning horses throughout her life. Glacier Park was one of her favorite places on Earth, but she also enjoyed traveling to many places around the world.

She is survived by her five children; and her two brothers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters and a brother.
