She was born Jan. 6, 1923 in Middletown, Ohio, the daughter of the late Russell O. and Florence Swayney Ruckman. Her husband of 50 years, Frederick J. Neal, died in 1995.
Mrs. Neal was a 1941 graduate of Middletown High School. In 1956, she and her husband moved to Gettysburg where she raised her family. In her later years she worked at the Fashion Lane and Toby's ladies clothing stores in downtown Gettysburg. Ruth was a former member of the 1st Baptist Church in Gettysburg, where she served as secretary and treasurer for a time. For the last 15 years she has been an active member of Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church. Ruth was a board member of the Adams County Unit of the American Cancer Society, a member of the Adams County UNICEF Committee, a member of the Sub league of Gettysburg College, a member of the Ladies Prayer Breakfast, and a member of the Adams County WCTU. Mrs. Neal was a volunteer driver for both Meals-on-Wheels and Road to Recovery. She had also been an active volunteer for the Friends of the National Park at the Rupp House, among other activities. Ruth was a long time member of the Biglerville Garden Club and was a secretary and treasurer for the Gettysburg YWCA. She was also a founding member, 1987, and chairman (1990-1999) of the Ruckman Family Scholarship Fund; and never missed a Ruckman reunion.
Mrs. Neal is survived by her son Mark A. Neal of Biglerville; one grandchild; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister Betty S. Ruckman of Tucson, Arizona. She was predeceased by a son Aaron L. "Skip" Neal.
