CUYAHOGA FALLS - Lawrence Gene Gatton, "Gene" 82, died February 19, 2018.

He was born in Butler, Ohio. He began his career at North American Aviation in Columbus, Ohio. He moved to Akron to become a design engineer for the spacesuit division of BF Goodrich working with the Gemini and Mercury astronauts. He often wore a demo spacesuit for presentations to school groups. Gene retired from Erico in Solon, Oh, in 2001.While there he served on a Railroad Engineering Committee for the US government which determined design standards for railroads. Gene also served several terms on the ONU Engineering Advisory Board. Gene was an active member of Grandview UM Church serving in various positions, currently serving as assistant treasurer. He was also a certified Lay Speaker for the UM Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents Royal and Marian; brother Tom.

Gene is survived by his wife of 56 years, Susan; daughters Debbie Gatton (Gary Kustis) and Diane Daum; grandchildren Aaron, Allie, and Emily; sister-in-law Sandy Gatton.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday February 24, 2018 at Grandview United Methodist Church, 2315 Phelps Ave., Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio with Pastor David Hull-Frye officiating. Friends may call Friday 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 1930 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, 44221. And one hour prior to the services.

Family wishes to thank the staff of Summa Hospice, especially Diane, Paula, Ed and Pastor Joseph. Memorials may be made to Grandview United Methodist Church.
