John Rooney was born in Ireland June 24, 1820, the son of Michael and Catharine (Caulfield) Rooney. He was the fifth child of twelve children. Around 1843, as life became more unbearable in Ireland, John emigrated to Canada where two brothers and a sister had earlier immigrated to.

Mary McCool was the daughter of Michael and Sarah (Flannigan) McCool. They lived in Hull, Canada.

John married Mary McCool on October 16, 1844 in Canada. They had twelve children:

Catherine - married William Joseph Martin
Michael J. - single
James - married Annie Egan
Sarah Ann - married John Darcy
John G. - single, moved to Montana
Hugh - married Winnifred Rooney 1st cousin
Patrick - married a Miss Reading
Thomas T. - married Ellen Rooney, and Anna Murphy
William - married Helena Riedel
Mary Ann - married Dennis Egan
Elizabeth - married Thomas Egan
Joseph - died as an infant

About 1867, John and some brothers and other relatives, traveled to the United States to locate some homestead land in Minnesota. Later, they returned to Canada to bring their families to the Padua area. John and Mary homesteaded 160 acres of land located about 1 1/2 miles southwest of Padua, and became farmers. Their farm machinery consisted of a breaking plow and a cradle. After John's death, son William farmed the homestead, and after William's death, his two sons Howard and Leo farmed the homestead.

John was killed in 1880 when a load of wheat he was hauling to town tipped over onto him. Mary continued to live on the farm, with her son William, until her death in 1893.

John and Mary's children Catherine Martin, Michael J., James, Thomas T., William, Mary Ann Egan, and Elizabeth Egan are buried in Padua. John's mother, Catharine Rooney, and brothers and sisters Patrick, Thomas, Catharine Killeen, and many other relatives are also buried in Padua.
