One of nine Tolar brothers, all born in Cumberland County North Carolina and all volunteered to serve the Confederacy at the beginning of the Civil War. He was a Private in Munn's Artillery, 36th North Carolina Volunteers. He was captured at the surrender of Fort Fisher, NC.
