One of nine Tolar brothers, all born in Cumberland County North Carolina and all volunteered to serve the Confederacy at the beginning of the Civil War. He was a Captain in Company B of the 10th South Carolina Volunteers. He was seriously wounded while leading a charge at the Battle of Atlanta, Georgia on July 22, 1864.
