Nine Year Old Justin Bryce Undergoes Live Organ Liver Transplant
Donor & Recipient Doing Well
"Greene - Chuck Bryce Sr. never thought much of organ donation, but that has all changed now that it has hit very close to home.
Chuck's grandson, Justin Bryce, the son of Chuck Jr. & Marty (Cummings) Bryce of Greene, underwent a live donor liver transplant Friday at Alfred - Dupont Children's Hospital in Wilmington, DE, with the donor being his uncle, Dean Cummings.
"They're both doing just fine," Chuck Sr. said Monday, having arrived back home late Sunday night. "They think they got all of the tumor and it looks real food. No other cancer was found.
"Dean's sore, but doing well. He was up Saturday and yesterday (Sunday), he was transferred to a regular room."
Justin, 9, was diagnosed with a tumor on his liver last July. Subsequently chemotherapy treatments proved unsuccessful and surgery was scheduled for January 28 to remove the tumor and part of Justin's liver.
A setback occurred when doctors found yet another tumor on Justin's liver and he was immediately put on the donor list with high priority.
"They were looking for a cadaver liver, but they began testing relatives to see if they would be a match for a live organ transplant," Chuck Sr. said.
Cummings, Justin's mother's brother was deemed a match for Justin and everyone was notified the surgery would be performed on Friday.
"They found out yesterday (Wednesday) that (Dean) was a match, so things moved uite quickly," Chuck Sr. said.
Dean was taken to surgery at 6 a.m. then Justin was prepared for his surgery at 11:30 a.m. According to Chuck, Justin did not get out of surgery until 11"30 p.m. that evening.
"Justin slept all day Saturday and finally woke up later on Sunday and seemed to be his old self."
"We woke him by watching cartoons on television; he loves cartons."
"Yeah, when someone tried to change the channel with the cartoons, Justin slugged him and told him to turn it back." said Chuck, whi added that Justin didn't stay awake long before he was sleeping again.
Dean will probably be coming home either Wednesday or Thursday, but will be limited in his activities, according to Chuck.
Justin, after three or four days in Intensive Care Unit, will be transferred to another room and will have to stay in Delaware about two months while he (is) closely monitored.
Chuck said the treatment that Justin, Dean and the rest of the family has received at the hospital has been tremendous.
"It's a great bunch down there, the doctors and nurses" said Chuck. "One nurse is assigned to Justin at all times."
While Justin recuperates he and his parents will stay at a Ronald McDonald House across the street from the hospital. Ronald McDonald House provides free housing for ill children and their parents.
"We would like to thank the Ronald McDonald House for their kindness; it's a wonderful thing they do for people," Chuck said.
A proud grandfather cannot speak enough about organ donation and what it has done for his family.
"I never thought much about it, but now that it has hit close to home, I want to make people aware of what organ donation can do.," Chuck said.
February 14 is Organ Donation Awareness Day throughout the country. There is such a shortage of organ donors. Chuck urges people to sign their organ donor card and help save a life, maybe a life like his grandson Justin.
"Sign your organ donation card," Chuck said."
