Arva was a 1947 graduate of Luray High School. After a year at Elon College, N.C., he served during the Korean War. He was stationed in Munich, Germany, from 1951 to 1953. He enrolled in Bridgewater College, where he earned a B.S. degree in business administration and immediately became affi liated with State Farm Insurance Co., where he served for more than 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was an operations supervisor in the Underwriting Department of the Frederick Regional offi ce.
An avid sports fan, he remained loyal to the Washington Redskins and the Baltimore Orioles. Always an advocate of good health, he enjoyed outdoor activities, especially hiking the C& O Canal trail from Georgetown to Cumberland, Md.
He was a member of the Leaksville United Church of Christ, where he served in many capacities over the years and provided faithful service until the last weeks of his life. He is survived by his wife, Jane Harrison Short; a brother, Max L. Short of Luray; a sister, Jane S. Smith of Farmville; numerous nieces and nephews, and six stepchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin Short and James E.
Short; and two sisters, Valton Huffman and Gertrude Jewell. The funeral service will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, May 5, at the Leaksville United Church of Christ with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service, from 10 to 11 a. m.
