"Newspaper Obituary – Thursday, April 9, 1931 Sandy Creek News - Edson O. Kent - Edson Orlando Kent, a life long resident of the town of Sandy Creek; passed away on Easter Morning, April 5, 1931, following many months of weakness and suffering from bronchial trouble. Mr. Kent was born July 15, 1847, the youngest of three children of Susan Phillips and Orlando Kent to enter the Kent farm homestead where the family has always resided. It was to this same home on January 18, 1870 that Edson Kent brought his bride, Ellen J. Knollin, a daughter of Ellen Near and John Knollin. Here for over 61 years has been maintained a home of domestic happiness. The Kent home was a "homey" place where a guest was made royally welcome and future invitations were always looked forward to with pleasurable anticipation, for Mr. and Mrs. Kent were ideal hosts. While Mr. Kent was always a hard worker and his farm productive and well managed, he found time to enjoy the aesthetic side of life, especially music and flowers. For many years his flower garden has received his special attention and has long been the admiration of the passer by. He loved music and singing. In later years it has been his habit before retiring to sit at the piano and play and sing the hymns he loved, for though weak in body, his voice was strong and clear. The subject of this sketch was educated at Pulaski Academy and later at Falley Seminary where he was converted at the age of seventeen. He held, the distinction of serving the longest term of membership of any in the local First Methodist Episcopal church, having joined 66 years ago. During all this period he with his family, were faithful and regular attendants at the church serivces until ill health prevented. To Mr. And Mrs. Elson O. Kent were born four children, Bertha E., who married Alfred Bettinger and died in 1909, Charles E., who resides near the family home, Ernest, who died in 1920, and Fred V. , who resides at Lacona. The other survivors of the family are his widow, Mrs. Ellen J. Kent, a daughter in law, Mrs. Anna Kent, widow of the son, Ernest; three grandchildren, Floyd, Daniel, and Cathryn, and one great grandchild, Jolene. The funeral services were held from the family home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock with his pastor, Rev. Wm. O. Thomas officiating. Interment was made in Woodlawn cemetery."
