His family moved to Nacogdoches before he started school. When he was 16, he joined the U.S. Navy and left for basic training in San Diego, California. After training he served on the USS Cowell, a destroyer in the Pacific. His ship was deployed off the Vietnam coast during the Tonkin Gulf Incident. After his service, he graduated from business college, and then returned to Nacogdoches where he began his employment with Texas Farm Products company where he worked in customer service and sales until he retired. When he started working, he met his future wife, Libby Aiken. They were married on May 31, 1969 and spent the first 17 years of marriage traveling all over the United States and eating at great restaurants. In 1985, their son, Mark Stephenson Mitchell was born, but it did not slow them down because they took him with them. Tommy loved to fish and hunt and go to antique fairs and flea markets. He was also the family cook and especially loved making chicken and dressing for holiday dinners.
He is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Libby Aiken Mitchell; son, Mark Stephenson Mitchell of Austin; sister, Alice Joy Randall and husband, Charles of Nacogdoches; sisters-in-law, Becky Simpson and husband, Jerry of Nacogdoches, and Nancy Moore and husband, David of Nacogdoches; nephews, Tony Randall, Don Jones, and Jerry Brown; niece, Amy Butler; and several great nephews and nieces.
Pallbearers will be Terry Brown, Tony Randall, David Moore, Jerry Simpson, Jake Henson, Brandon Brown and Aaron Brown.
