WALLA WALLA — Edward Wright Maughan, 88, of Milton-Freewater died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla. At his request, no funeral services will be held. A gathering of family and friends will be Saturday, May 14 at 1 p.m. at the family home in Milton Freewater.
Mr. Maughan was born Nov. 26, 1922, in Cardston, Alberta, Canada, to Hyrum and Alice Wright Maughan. He moved at a very young age to Washington state and throughout his childhood the family moved many times between Washington and Montana. He graduated in 1943 from Central Valley High in Spokane, Wash., where he was an outstanding athlete, lettering in both varsity football and track.
Following graduation he joined the Army with his younger brother, Vern. After an injury sustained during basic training, he was discharged and he returned home to begin a lifelong career in agriculture.
He was an excellent mechanic and had a passion for new inventions and raising horses. In 1946 he married Alva May Glorfield Anderson and they had three daughters in addition to her daughter and son from a previous marriage. They later divorced. In 1966 he married Linda Morasch, with whom he shared the rest of his life.
Mr. Maughan is survived by his wife, Linda, at home; daughters Marie Kelseth and Jeanne Murray, both of St. John, Wash., and Dona O'Shaughnessy of Otis Orchards, Wash.; stepchildren Gracie Ann Miller of St. John, Wash., and Bruce Maughan of Walla Walla; siblings Dean Maughan of Athol, Idaho, Erma Scranton of Chewelah, Wash., Lilly Melby of Startup, Wash., Jean Hyde of Kettle Falls, Wash., and June Howard of Farmington, Utah; a large blended family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
