Edward J. Thornton, 72, of Buffalo Township, died Monday, April 30, 2018, with his wife by his side. He was born Oct. 23, 1945, in Johnstown to the late Rev. Edward W. and Pearl I. (Low) Thornton. He grew up in West Deer and graduated from West Deer High School in 1964. Ed served his country during the Vietnam War in the Air Force, achieving a rank of sergeant. Ed was a member of Deer Lakes Community Church of the Nazarene. He worked for over 20 years for the VA Hospital in Aspinwall in the housekeeping department. He enjoyed sports, baseball, Steelers football and especially spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Donna M. (Fosnaught) Thornton; his daughters, Denise M. (Russell) Wood, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Roxanna L. Thornton, at home; two granddaughters, Roxanna Mae Wood and Emma J. Wood; his siblings, William D. (Marcia) Thornton, Kathryn M. Foust and Ronald C. Thornton, all of Mineral Point; and his father- and mother-in-law, Joseph M. and Bertha S. (Creese) Fosnaught Sr., of Bairdford. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Rachel Wood, and his sister, Margaret P. Thornton.
Family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to the time of the service at 2 p.m. Friday, May 4, at Deer Lakes Community Church of the Nazarene, 1839 Saxonburg Blvd., Tarentum, in West Deer Township, with the Rev. Richard E. Wise officiating. Following the service, he will be laid to rest in Lakewood Memorial Gardens, Indiana Township.
