Ella was the great granddaughter of the historic Captain James Estill of Kentucky, and third born of Col. Robert and Mary Ann Estill. Her father, Col. Robert Estill, was a prominent figure in Kentucky and Missouri, and a generous benefactor; the town in which Ella was born is his namesake.

When she was 24 she married Felix Lafayette La Force, a prominent business owner and merchant in Kansas City, Missouri. He started out as a merchant in dry goods and ended up a successful financier. Her sister, Mary Clifton (known as "Clifton"), married Felix's brother Washington Butler (sisters marrying brothers).

Ella and Felix had no children of their own, but following a tragic farm accident that claimed the life of her husband's brother Washington Butler in 1907, she and Felix adopted all four of Washington Butler's sons and raised them alongside their mother (and Ella's sister) Clifton LaForce. Her adopted nephews are Robert Estill (1892-1942), Felix Lafayette (her husband's namesake) (1893-1967), William Watson (1895-1980) and Washington Butler II (1899-1984). Their memorials are linked to their father’s (and Felix’s brother’s) memorial - Washington Butler LaForce.

After the death of her husband in 1923, Ella moved out to California to be with her sister Clifton and her adopted nephews. She remained in Los Angeles for the remainder of her life and lived to 91 years of age.
