George I. Johnson

Services were held Saturday, July 11 at Terpening & Son Chapel for George I. Johnson of Artesia, NM.

Johnson, 76, died July 7 at his residence. Services were conducted by Robert W. Johnson of Arlington, TX, burial was at Johnson Farm in Artesia. Pallbearers were Robert H. Johnson, Michael E. Sullivan, Harvey D. Smith, Donald Archer, Rick Madron and Rob Matthews.

Born Nov. 28, 1915 in Decatur, Johnson moved to Artesia in 1924. He was a farmer and a rancher. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, and was named Outstanding Farmer of the Year by Central Valley
SWCD in 1980.

Johnson was preceded in death by brothers, Herman and Charles Johnson, and an infant brother.

Survivors include his wife Geraldine Johnson, Artesia; sons, Robert H. Johnson, Artesia & Floyd and Tommy I. Johnson, both of Lake Arthur, daughters, Georgie E. Johnson and Christine Salt, both of Artesia and G. Marie Johnson, of Ireland; brothers W. I. (Bill) Johnson, Cottonwood and Lamar Johnson, San Diego; sisters; Mary McCaw, and Helen McCaw, both of Artesia, Christine Elizabeth Butler, both of Albuquerque, Lorene Lambert of Wichita, Kan., Edna Uterback of Portales, Cleo Gossett of Ephrata, Wash., Oneta Brown of Castlerock, CO, and Oleta Cooper of Shatter, CA; nine grandchildren, including Ellen Owens and Tana Johnson, Jon Salt, Fred and Lisa Johnson of Artesia; three great grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation.
