Wayne Halburton Crawford, Jr
April 20, 1927 - May 12, 2016
Truly an officer and a gentleman, Wayne passed away peacefully in his sleep at home with family.

Wayne was a long time resident of Coronado, but grew up in San Bernardino, Ca. He graduated from high school in 1944 and after learning some of his cousins were in the Army fighting in World War II, he decided to join the Navy. He entered the V12 program and joined the ROTC program, both at USC until he graduated in 1947.

Wayne was commissioned to duty in the USN and within a few years was sent to Florida to begin flight training. After returning to Coronado he bought one of the first homes in the Cays’ Trinidad Village and was married to his first wife Camille. Camille passed away in 1990.

Wayne remained in the Navy for 30 years before retiring. In addition, he returned to USC and in 1978 earned his Masters of Science in Systems management. Wayne was also an inductee of the Marquis’s “Who’s Who” publication in America of influential people for many years running.

Over the years you could find Wayne every Wednesday at the Coronado Golf course. He loved golf, had won many trophies through out his life and would still volunteer his time after he could no longer play. Every Tuesday you could find him at the Air and Space museum. Wayne believed in volunteering and had spent over 25 years working at the museum. In addition, he loved the City of Coronado and was a senior Volunteer with the Coronado Police Department from 1996 until he retired in 2014. Wayne was recognized by the City of Coronado in 2011 for 15 years of dedicated service. He was one of the many who loved the 4th of July parade and would often donate his time and ride his 1966 Ford Mustang in the parade.

He belonged to several clubs and organizations including Navy league of San Diego, Tailhook Association, Classic Mustang Assoc, Concerned Citizens, USC San Diego Trojan Club , and the Optimist Club of Coronado, which he spent many years involved in everything, from cleaning up the Silver Strand to making coffee every Thursday morning. He was dedicated.

Wayne was also a bridge player, where he met his “lovely Lady” Lillian. They married in 1991 and spent the next 15 years cruising all over the world. They were also members of the Coronado Cays Yacht Club. Wayne was one of the first 30 members.

Wayne had a close relationship with his family. He is predeceased by his two “Lovely Wives” Camille Crews Crawford and Lillian Brown Crawford; and his step son Gilbert A Frank. He is survived by his son Gary Crawford; stepdaughters Gayle Frank and Lynne Villanueva; cousins Bob and Linda Beringer, Cheryl and Crystal; grandchildren, Jordan, Gilbert III, Karlie and Mateo; and brother in law John Brown, sister in law Aldina Alves and their families.

He was one of a kind, and will be truly missed by all that knew and loved him, but never forgotten. In the Captains words, “Every day’s a good day, some are just better than others”.. RIP our beloved Wayne.

A Military Memorial Service will be held Friday, May 27, at 2 p.m. at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life Wayne’s home in the Coronado Cays; call for address 619-429-7818.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Wayne’s memory to www.OptimistClubOfCoronado.org, or http://www.navyleague-sd.com/donations.
