Motion Picture Director. He received an Academy Award nomination for his directing of the film "Around the World in 80 Days" (1956). The son of noted stage actor Lawrence Anderson, Michael traveled extensively with his family during his youth and studied in France, Germany and Spain. He began his association with the entertainment industry as an errand boy with the Elstree Studios in England and rose to assistant director under Italian director Mario Zampi for the picture "Spy for a Day" (1940). This was followed with an acting role in the film "In Which We Serve" (1942) and after this experience, he served with the Royal Signal Corps during World War II. Upon his return home, he resumed his career and directed his first film "Private Angelo" (1949). He collaborated with filmmaker Michael Todd on "Around the World in 80 Days", for which he received an Oscar nomination and following this experience, he helmed a wide range of pictures in Britain and Hollywood over the next three decades. Among his other credits include "Shake Hands with the Devil" (1959), "All the Fine Young Cannibals" (1960), "Operation Crossbow" (1965), "The Quiller Memorandum" (1966), "The Shoes of the Fisherman" (1968), "Pope Joan" (1972), "Logan's Run" (1976) and "Orca" (1977). He was married to Canadian actress Adrienne Ellis from 1977 until his death.
