John Edwin Bishop, 66, passed away on June 18, 2017.

He was born and raised in Norfolk, VA, attended Granby High School and received his Masters of Science from Old Dominion University. John had a distinguished career working as a civilian for the Navy as an industrial hygienist. He led several programs at the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center, Portsmouth Naval Hospital and Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He started his career as a health physicist at Norfolk General Hospital. In addition to his other responsibilities, he spent time as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Old Dominion University. He was widely recognized for his contributions to the Navy and received several awards including the Meritorious Civilian Service Award. He was an instructor, lecturer and member of many societies to include the Health Physics Society, and American Industrial Hygiene Association. He was certified in the Comprehensive Practice of Industrial Hygiene (CIH) by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.

He spent his life helping people, touched many lives for the better, and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and peers. He was an avid sailor for most of his life and loved the water. He was also a licensed amateur radio enthusiast (KM4ZUM) and was an active member of the ARRL of Chesapeake, VA.

He leaves this world to be cherished in memory by his wife, Laura Bishop; his son, Brian Bishop; his daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Chris Yount; his two year old grandson, Riley P.W. Yount; his mother-in-law, Dolores Barbolla; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Andrew and Erin Barbolla; nephew, Phillip Barbolla; and niece, Elizabeth Barbolla. He was preceded in death by his father, John Oscar Bishop; mother, Louise Wright Bishop; brother, Frank Bishop; and his oldest son, Kevin Thomas Bishop (84595903). He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel on Thursday, June 22, 2017, from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) at jdrf.org or the Children's Oncology Group Foundation at www.cog-foundation.org
