Billy L Byrd was born on February 5, 1931 in Indian Mound, Stewart County, Tennessee, the son of Thomas H "Tom" Byrd (1892–1977) and Flossie E (Smith) Byrd (1895–1973).

He graduated from Dover High School and served in the US Air Force for 3 years at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio, Texas.

Billy was married on November 28, 1952 to Eva Clark (1929–2017), the daughter of Wayne Clark and Ida (Hargis ) Clark. They lived in San Antonio for a year before his discharge in 1953.

The couple returned to Tennessee and Billy enrolled at Austin Peay State University, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1955 and later accepted a job at ORAU working in cancer research, where he remained until his retirement in 1994.

He was a member of the New York Avenue Church of Christ in Oak Ridge, as well as a longtime member of Oak Ridge Country Club and Oak Ridge Senior Center, where he made many friends.

Billy was 87 years old when he passed away on April 23, 2018 at NHC Farragut in Knoxville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, several brothers and sisters and by his wife, while survivors included a brother in Dover, Tennessee, a sister of Toledo, Ohio, son at Knoxville, Tennessee, daughter in Richmond, Kentucky, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside Services were held in Fairview Cemetery in Indian Mound.
