James was born in Williamson County, TN and served in the 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment, Company D, Williamson Grays. He was elected 4th Sergeant in 1862. He was wounded in the thigh by a piece of Grapeshot at the Battle of Perryville, KY on October 8, 1862. He was captured in Harrodsburg, KY two days later in the hospital. He was exchanged a few months later. At the Battle of Missionary Ridge a bullet tore through the left side of his mouth and upper jaw and caused blindness in his eye. He was put on light duty following his wound and worked in a hospital in Newnan, GA before being let go to return home. He was captured at his home in December 1864. He married in 1866 and moved to Union City in 1869. Just before his death he moved in with his son in Memphis, TN where he died in 1930. He was taken back to Union City to be buried.
