Robert was the son of James P. and Minerva (Maulding) Alford. He married Mary Castle of Smith County, Texas in 1892 and he had three daughters, Cecilia, Catherine and Roberta. Robert established the Alford Ice Plant in 1912, the first of its kind in Fort Worth to use electrical equipment.
