Alexander is a son of Mary Turner and Matthew Andrew Perry of Paisley, Renfrewhire, Scotland.

Husband of Marion Leckie Shanks. They married 21 December 1855 and by 1871 had their last child of eight, all whom were born in what was then called the "Three Mile Creek" region of Box Elder County. This area would be called Perry, Utah and Willow Creek, later named Willard, Utah.

Three of their children died as children. They were sealed as a family in the LDS Endowment House at Salt Lake City, shortly before the death of their son, Mathew Perry, in 1866.

Sometime prior to 1886, when polygamy was still practiced in the Territory, Alexander married Amamda Josafina Anderson Kilstsdt, a Swedish girl 30 years younger than he. They were also sealed as a family after the birth of a daughter in January of that year.

Mother and daughter's identities have been almost lost over the decades, as Alexander died at age 60, unexpectedly, when on a mission in Mexico. His young wife, a widow at 27, eventually married a young man her age, John Solomon Christian Hartman, who raised little Mary Ellen Perry as his own, along with their other three children.
