Joseph McArthur first appears in the 1855 Philadelphia directory living on Pennsylvania Avenue below 25th Street. Hexemer maps indicate that he probably lived in a rowhouse located at the southeast corner of 25th & Pennsylvania.

About 1860, the family moved to 29th and Oxford Sts. where he worked as a laborer and fireman at the Luther Martin & Co. Lamp Black Factory. This factory was previously located at 25th and Fairmount during the 1850s. Francis most likely found work with this firm shortly after his arrival in American and relocated when the factory did. L. Martin & Co. began lampblack manufactury in 1849.

We find that in 1870 the house of Joseph McArthur was on the west side of Bailey street, above Jefferson Street, between Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh streets. The 1870 Common Council passed resolution for this to be the polling location for the 20th Division of the 20th Ward. (Appendix 49, 1870 Philadelphia Journal of Common Council, Vol. 2. pg. 59).

Public Ledger, Thursday September 18, 1879:

Upon his death, the location of his home at Bailey and Jefferson became a wheelwright business operated by his son Joseph P. McArthur, Sr.
