John J. Quirk, 87, died peacefully Sunday, April 22, 2018, surrounded by family in Saratoga Springs, NY.

John was born January 17, 1931 in New York City, the second son of Jack and Loretta (Morrissey) Quirk.

He grew up in Astoria, Queens with his brother and sister until he was drafted into the US Army in September of 1952. He saw combat in Korea with the 204th Field Artillery Battalion and was honorably discharged in August of ’53.

He then attended SUNY Canton and graduated in 1955 with an associate degree in Hotel and Resort Management.

His work took him to Manhattan and Schenectady before he returned to school full time, matriculating at SUNY Albany and earning a degree in English and Business. He taught middle school English in South Huntington, Long Island for a year before starting graduate studies on academic scholarship at Syracuse University.

He married Marilyn Jane Halstead in the summer of 1959 and they moved to Kansas City where he taught high school English and earned a Master’s degree in English from Missouri University, Kansas City.

After teaching for three years in the Midwest, he returned to New York State, taking a position in the English department at Queensbury High School in Queensbury, New York. His son, Michael, born in Missouri, was soon joined by younger sisters, Sarah and Anna.

While at Queensbury, John was active with the faculty association, serving in various faculty association capacities and with the negotiating committee. He worked part time through the year and summers in the resort industry in Lake George, but did have time for some community service with the Loft Press, a regional literary magazine and the Crandall Library with both Friends of the Crandall Library and the Crandall Library Board of Directors.

His wife and he divorced in 1985 and he later married the former Mary E. Farrington in 1989. They moved from Glens Falls to Saratoga Springs in 1999.

He is predeceased by his parents; stepdad, Ambrose Hill; brother, William J. Quirk and his wife Charlotte of Nanuet, New York; his sister, Patricia and her husband August Reale of Melbourne, FL; stepbrother, John Hill of Huntsville, AL; stepson, Scott Leombruno of Ft. Bragg, CA; and stepson, Kyle Nelson of Saratoga Springs, NY.

He is survived by his wife of twenty-nine years, Mary Elizabeth Quirk of Saratoga Springs, NY; his son Michael, wife Jeannine and grandchildren Emily, Kyleigh, Julia and Nathan of Syracuse, NY; his daughter Sarah Jane Kuhn, husband Craig and grandchildren Erin, Erika and Sean of Glens Falls, NY; his daughter Anna Morrissey Quirk, husband Barry Hofman and grandchild, Levi of Scottsville, VA; stepson Ormondo Leombruno, wife Nance and grandchildren Dion, Zoe and Bastiaan of San Anselmo, CA; and stepson Daniel Leombruno, wife Brooke and grandchildren Adeleah, Harper and Quinton of Park City, UT. Interment will take place at the Saratoga National Cemetery in Saratoga Springs, NY.
