Cathy (Zimmerman) Wilson, 56, of West Des Moines, Iowa died peacefully at home on Friday, August 4, 2017, at 6 pm after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 8 from 5 until 8 pm at Iles Westover Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Lutheran Church of Hope on Wednesday, August 9 at 11 am with luncheon to follow. Cathy is survived by her beloved husband of 29 years, Dr. Thomas Wilson; their two daughters, Sarah and Emily Wilson; her sister, Carla (Zimmerman) Reynolds; and her father, Paul Zimmerman. Her mother, LaVonne Zimmerman, preceded her in death.
Cathy was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on November 21, 1960, the daughter of Paul A. and LaVonne M. Zimmerman. She attended the Cedar Falls public schools from kindergarten on and graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1979. She then went on to Iowa State University studying communicative disorders and earned her B.A. with honors in 1983. While at Iowa State, Cathy was a member of the sorority Alpha Omicron Pi. She attended graduate school in speech and language pathology at the University of Iowa and earned her master's degree in 1985.
Cathy met her husband, Tom, in October of 1983 while they both were attending the University of Iowa. The two were married five years later in April of 1988 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Cathy and Tom had two children together, Sarah, 24, and Emily, 18.
During her adult life, Cathy worked as a speech-language pathologist in a variety of settings, including several schools, hospitals, and her own home. Cathy continued working privately as an SLP while raising her daughters. She enjoyed being able to be very involved in her children's lives, cheering them on at swim meets most every weekend. When she wasn't busy being a mom, Cathy was involved in PEO, Junior League, and volunteered with the local schools. She also enjoyed playing golf with her husband and friends, making cards, and scrapbooking.
