Jazz Musician. He was best known for writing and performing the songs that were a part of ABC's "Schoolhouse Rock" during the 1970s and 1980s. He began working in music while in the United States Army Special Services Band from 1943 to 1945. He later earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Texas. In the late 1940s, he went to New York, where he worked as a pianist and singer. He released his debut album, "Devil May Care" in 1956 and not long after, Miles Davis recorded his interpretation of the title track. This recording went on to become a jazz standard. He went on to collaborate with Davis on other works including "Blue Xmas (To Whom It May Concern)" and "Nothing Like You". In 1971, he was asked to set the multiplication table to music and he wrote and performed "Three is a Magic Number". This song became the start of the long-running "Schoolhouse Rock" series of musical educational cartoons that would run for the next three decades. He would also continue performing and writing music for the rest of his life.
