Betty Kathleen (Hunt) Bassett, of Hinckley, MN was 89 years of age when she peacefully passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018. She is proceeded in death by her parents, Walter James & Margaret Hunt; her husband, Gene Bassett; her daughter, Lynn (Bassett) Zaudtke; granddaughter, Kristine (Kristy) Margaret Bassett; great-granddaughter, Shae Lynne Zaudtke; sisters, Doreen (Ivor Mitchell), Jeanne (Ian Quello); and brother, Tony.

Betty was the youngest of four children born to Walter James and Margaret Hunt in Chelsea, London, England on July 10, 1928. Betty attended Church of England church school at age 3 and was baptized and confirmed at Christ’s Church in Chelsea. She was 10 years of age when England declared war on Germany and along with two sisters and one brother were evacuated out of London. After three months with little action from Germany, the parents were given the option to have their children returned home. Immediately after their return to London, the London Blitz began. She witnessed the horrors of war until World War II ended. On one occasion, Chelsea Christ Church was hit by fire bombs and on fire as well as the other houses on their street but their house was untouched. Betty worked as a telephone operator for Peter Jones department store and also volunteered to man phones at Chelsea Town Hall directing fire stations where to proceed until the Blitz eased up.

On May 1, 1945 Betty was married to Staff Sgt. Eugene E. Bassett from Hinckley, Minnesota in Christ Church Chelsea with the roof still open from the bombing. She came to Minnesota in 1946 coming across the Atlantic on the war bride ship. Gene came home earlier with the troops.

Betty was very active in the Hinckley community. She was a Sunday school, Bible school teacher and release time teacher. She also sang in the choir at First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, treasurer for Pine County Red Cross for many years, secretary of the Pine County Hospital Auxiliary organizing fund raising efforts each Christmas for Love lights. Betty worked for years at the Hinckley Variety Store and Amoco in Mora until she retired. After Gene’s passing she became a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. She was secretary of Guild and helped with fund raising activities.

Being part of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s lives was her greatest treasure. She loved attending all of their sporting events. Traveling to England with her grandchildren and other family members was a time she held in her heart. It gave her a chance to bond with each of them and share with them their heritage.
