A Burial Office with Holy Eucharist for Debby Cooke, 75, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. James Episcopal Church, 516 Washington St., West Dundee. The Rev. Brian Couvillion will officiate.
Born Jan. 6, 1925, in Chicago, the daughter of Emory and Alice (nee Moseley) Wilder, she died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at home. Burial will be in St. James Churchyard Cemetery.
Mrs. Cooke spent the first eight years of her life in Winnetka. In 1932, she and her family moved to Barrington Hills. She was a 1945 graduate of Elgin Academy. She attended Monticello College for one year, prior to her marriage. During her many years as a Barrington Hills resident, she was a former Cub and Girl Scout troop leader. Mrs. Cooke was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, a Republican precinct captain in Barrington Hills, member and former 25-year volunteer at the Barrington Historical Society, trustee and former president of the Barrington Township Historical Cemeteries, former 12-year trustee of Elgin Academy and former 10- year member of the Elgin Choral Union.
Mrs. Cooke was an amateur archeologist and had her own Indian burial site, obtaining a site number from the University of Illinois. She had a great love for her Indian burial site and would volunteer her time as a speaker in the Barrington School District talking about Indians native to the Barrington Hills area.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Henry E. "Hank" Cooke, whom she married on Oct. 26, 1946; daughter, Martha "Muffy" Cooke of Barrington Hills; and son, John W. Cooke of Lake Barrington Shores.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Phoebe A. Wilder.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. James Episcopal Church or St. Joseph Indian School in Chamberland, S.D.
Arrangements were made by Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee.
